About Us

Hive Point is a free calculator site. It exists because the calculations people actually need during a working day are small and frequent, and the tools for them are usually either buried in a spreadsheet or locked behind a sign-up form.

Everything here runs in the browser. There is no account, no fee, and nothing you type is stored.

What is on the site

The calculators are grouped by the kind of work they belong to. The number in brackets is how many tools that section holds.

How a calculator page works

Open any tool and you find the same four things.

  • The formula, written out. Each page states the equation it runs, so the steps can be repeated by hand or moved into a spreadsheet.
  • Units on every input. Every field names the unit it expects, so a conversion is deliberate rather than accidental.
  • A worked example. A filled-in example you can compare against your own numbers before relying on the output.
  • Where the estimate stops. Each page lists the assumptions it makes and what it leaves out.

The home page walks through the same four points with a live example.

Who maintains Hive Point

Hive Point is written and maintained by Ellis Vaughn, the pen name used by the person who builds the calculators, keeps the notes on each page current, and answers the mail that comes in. It is a one-person project, not a company, a firm or a practice.

Ellis is not a licensed financial, legal, tax, medical or investment professional, and nothing on this site is professional advice. A few things follow from that, and they are worth stating plainly:

  • Every result is an estimate. It is arithmetic applied to the numbers you type in. The site does not verify those numbers and cannot know whether they match your situation.
  • Each page states its inputs, units and defaults. That is so the arithmetic can be checked rather than taken on faith.
  • Rates, factors and conventions move. Tax brackets, duty rates, unit constants and standard assumptions differ by country, by state or province, and by date. Something that was right last year may not be right today.
  • For decisions with real consequences, ask a professional. Taxes, loans, insurance, investments, legal claims and anything medical should go to someone who can look at your actual circumstances. Full details are on the disclaimer page.
  • If a number looks wrong, say so. Send the inputs you used and the result you expected through the contact page, and the page gets re-checked.
